Alice Dodson’s Top Secret Magic Potion

Posted in A Day In The Life..., Inspirations, Recipes, Use What You Have on May 30th, 2012 by A. Dodson's – Comments Off

We all have a special recipe passed down from one generation to the next. But do you have a magic potion recipe? It’s ok, we play well with others here at A. Dodson’s and we also like to share our toys. And potions.

Alison learned a special technique from her momma, Alice Dodson, for removing water spots or scratches on furniture and hardwood flooring. When we were preparing to open our Home Decor Consignment Shop next door, I caught Alison on her hands and knees with a Ball Jar. And then I saw magic happen right before my very eyes.

Alice’s Wood Cleaning Magic Potion

1/2 Raw Linseed Oil

1/2 Turpentine

Instructions:
Dap the mixture on your stain or scratch
Use #400 Steel Wool and rub with the grain of the wood.
Wipe with a heavy towel then let sit overnight. Heavy stains or scratches may take two rounds.

Alice learned this trick from Jimmy Winn from Mt. Vernon Antiques in Port Norfolk, VA. When we asked Alice how long she’d been using this technique her answer was “how old am I?”

And now, our dear friends, go forth and show us some of your Before and Afters!

Skinny(ish) Peanut Butter Valentine Cookies

Posted in Eating Well, Food & Nutrition, Inspirations, Recipes on February 13th, 2012 by A. Dodson's – 2 Comments

Quick, drop whatever you’re doing. Not only are these cookies delish but there could be a dash of nourishment in them. It just happened by surprise when I was trying to make some low-fat cookies. Halfway through the process I realized I didn’t have any applesauce. So I used non-fat plain Greek Yogurt and hot damn they turned out GOOD! (These statements have been verified by a 5 year old so get to stepping!)

Skinny(ish) Peanut Butter Cookies
Servings: 12 • Size: 2 cookies Calories: 200 • Fat: 7.0 g • Protein: 4.4 g • Carb: 34.5 g • Fiber: 1.4 g • Sugar: 25.4 g Sodium: 113.1 mg

Ingredients:
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp butter, melted
3 tbsp natural peanut butter
1 egg
2 tbsp non-fat plain Greek Yogurt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt
24 Dove Chocolate Hearts

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Line two cookie sheets with non-stick silicone baking liners such as Silpats (I highly recommend for best results) or lightly spray cookie sheets with cooking spray.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt and stir to blend. In another bowl, whisk the sugars, butter, peanut butter, egg, yogurt and vanilla together until light and fluffy.

Whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients in two additions until the batter is very well blended. If the batter looks more “crumbly” than smooth, add just a drop of water at a time (ONLY if needed) until it smooths out.

Bake the cookies for about 5 minutes then add the chocolate hearts and bake another 5-7 minutes. Take them out when they are still very soft in the middle. They’ll firm up as they cool.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Watermelon ready for CSA pick up on A. Dodson's porch

If you’re wading through watermelons like us, you might be wondering what in the heck to do with all that goodness. Here are some neat watermelon recipes from our friends at Batten Bay Farm.

Watermelon Popsicles

6 cups cubed watermelon seeds removed

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

1 tablespoon freshly grated lime zest

Blend watermelon in a blender until liquified. Stir in lime juice and zest. Pour mixture through a sieve into a bowl and then spoon into Popsicle molds with sticks inserted. Freeze and enjoy. Makes 10-15, depending on size

Frozen Watermelon Margarita

1 large watermelon, 1/4 c sugar, 4 limes, 1 c tequila, coarse salt (optional)

Cut the watermelon into cubes. Using a hand blender, puree watermelon and add remaining ingredients. Pout into an airtight container and place in freezer until solid. Rub lime juice around rim of glasses. Press rims into the salt and scrape round servings from the frozen watermelon margarita mixture. Garnish with peels of lime zest.

Watermelon Salsa

3 c chopped watermelon, 2 tbsp lime juice, 1 tbsp chopped green onion, 1/2 t garlic salt, 1/2 c chopped green bell pepper, 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro, 1 tbsp chopped jalepano pepper

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Mix well and serve!

The Frugal Fashionista

The Frugal Fashionista

Believe it or not, I actually do like to write about things other than fashion! I love warm Virginia afternoons, country rides, and berry picking. Yesterday I went on a spontaneous adventure to Pungo Blueberry Farm with my mom, youngest sister, and nephew. We left at 5pm, and reached the farm at that perfect time of day when the sunlight is soft and mellow. Berries are a mere $1.89 lb…so support your local farms, enjoy picking your own produce, and create a fun memory with your family!

We arrive…

The adventure begins!

My mom, in her signature camo hat with rhinestone brooches, and my berry-stained nephew, Edward.

A farming fashion statement…Wellington boots!

My lovely little sister :)

And as always, we got a little carried away…

Just recently I started “going raw” for most meals, so this morning I made a breakfast smoothie with berries from our bounty, a frozen banana, walnuts, and coconut milk…delicious!
